The current LowStir base system comprises the necessary hardware and software to convert a suitable milling machine to a LowStir stir-welding system excluding an ISO taper to fit it to the milling machine, since this depends on the particular machine. (An ISO taper can be included at extra cost – size to be stated when ordering).

Specifically, the basic components of the system are as follows:

1) A LowStir sensor head unit including tool holder and heat shield disc. This is supplied already bolted together as a complete system including the ISO taper, if ordered, ready for installation in the milling machine head.

2) A calliper coupling module (CCM) must be fastened to a non-moving part of the milling machine. You may need to manufacture a suitable bracket to hold this. The calliper must fit around the LowStir sensor head communications disc as shown:

3) A signal processing module complete with mains power supply. This connects both to the CCM and to the computer via cables which are supplied.

4) An external temperature probe which can be optionally connected to any of the moving parts to monitor the temperature.

5) Set of tool assemblies. A typical assembly comprises a low wear shank and a replaceable tool (probe). If you order one tool type there will be one shank and ten probes supplied. If you order two different types of tool then there will be two shanks (one for each material to be welded) and five probes supplied for each of the two shanks.
6) Software for monitoring and recording various parameters of the weld. We are able to supply the software pre-installed and set up on a notebook (this is at an extra cost).

The system as a whole will be supplied fully tested and calibrated, ready for your use.

Please Note: Currently, you will need a licence to carry out friction stir welding. A special low rate applies to companies using the LowStir system for this process. Please contact TWI or Peter Cheetham at Sigmapi Systems Ltd for more information.
